Participation of a Faculty Member from the Department of General Sciences in a Master’s Thesis Defense at the College of Education for Girls, University of Mosul

Assistant Professor Dr. Anwar Mohammed Amin Abdullah from the Department of General Sciences at our college (College of Basic Education) participated in the defense of a Master’s thesis titled: “Preparation and Characterization of New Transition Metal Complexes with Schiff Bases Derived from Dicarbonyl Compounds, Study of Their Spectral and Structural Properties, and Evaluation of Their Potential Antibacterial Activity,” presented by the student Baraa Abdulmohsen Taha at the College of Education for Girls, University of Mosul. The defense took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in the seminar hall of the Department of Life Sciences.

Study Objective:

The study aimed to prepare and characterize new coordination complexes derived from dicarbonyl compounds. The work was divided into two main stages:

  1. The Organic Part: Focused on the preparation of four heterocyclic chelating ligands ($L_1-L_4$).

  2. The Inorganic Part: Involved synthesizing coordination complexes for these ligands at different molar ratios between the ligand and the metal ion ($L:2M$ and $L:1M$) using metal salts of $Cu(II)$, $Co(II)$, $Ni(II)$, $Cd(II)$, $Zn(II)$, and $Hg(II)$, yielding complexes with novel chemical formulas.

The synthesized ligands and their complexes were characterized using various techniques, including atomic absorption, spectral measurements (Infrared, Electronic spectra, $^1H$-NMR and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy, and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry), as well as magnetic susceptibility and molar electrical conductivity measurements. Furthermore, an antibacterial activity assay was conducted to evaluate the biological efficacy of both the ligands and selected prepared complexes against two strains of human pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results demonstrated significant inhibitory activity of the metal complexes compared to the free ligands, indicating their potential future utility in pharmaceutical applications.
