Ph.D. Dissertation Discussed at the Department of Arabic Language, College of Basic Education, University of Mosul

The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Basic Education, University of Mosul, discussed a Ph.D. dissertation titled: “The Tracing of Western Criticism in Modern Arabic Criticism,” submitted by the student Mohammed Abdul-Fattah Ali Hawas, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the college’s Umm Al-Rabieen Hall.

The dissertation explored the tracing of Western criticism within modern Arabic criticism, uncovering the pathways through which Western critical methodologies and concepts transitioned into the Arab critical environment, alongside the mechanisms of their reception and assimilation. It selected structuralism and deconstruction as representative models for the study, highlighting the prominent challenges that accompanied this reception—particularly issues concerning terminology, translation, methodology, and intellectual and cultural frames of reference—as well as the resulting diverse Arab critical positions toward receiving and assimilating these methodologies.
