A Specialized Workshop on “The Relationship Between Rhetoric and Stylistics”

The Department of Arabic Language, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, held a specialized workshop titled “The Relationship Between Rhetoric and Stylistics” within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). The workshop was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Faiza Mohammad Mahmoud.
During the workshop, she addressed the connection between rhetoric and stylistics, demonstrating that their relationship is one of evolution and close cognitive integration. In essence, stylistics is considered the modern and evolved extension of classical rhetoric after integrating it with the mechanisms of contemporary linguistics. Both disciplines focus on studying discourse and literary texts, examining the secrets of their aesthetics and their impact on the recipient. They also agree on analyzing phenomena of deviation (inziyah) and departure from standard language patterns to create new expressive meanings.
The differences between them lie in the fact that traditional rhetoric adopts a prescriptive approach that sets predefined rules and judgments for good speech and deals with textual evidence partially. In contrast, stylistics adopts a descriptive, analytical approach that studies the text as a unified and complete structure without judging it by traditional norms. Stylistics relies on rhetorical heritage—such as metaphor and trope—as analytical tools, but expands the scope of study to include phonetic, structural, and semantic levels to uncover the individual stylistic fingerprint of the writer, leading critics to describe stylistics as the new rhetoric of contemporary theoretical framework. The workshop concluded that the relationship between rhetoric and stylistics is one of evolution, integration, and continuation.
The session ended with questions and interventions from the audience.
