Waste Management (WM)

Waste Management (WM)

As part of the efforts of the College of Medicine – University of Mosul to promote environmentally sustainable practices and in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 6, 9, 11, and 12), the College has implemented the 3R Program (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), which aims to:

  • Reduce: Minimize the volume of waste generated from daily operations.

  • Reuse: Foster a culture of reusing materials and resources.

  • Recycle: Support waste segregation and recycling processes whenever possible.

Current Activities under the 3R Program:

Paper Consumption Reduction Initiative:
The College has adopted digital systems for the circulation of official documents and administrative announcements. Notifications and communications are now sent via official email rather than printed materials. Units involved include:

  • Continuing Education Unit

  • Scholarships and Cultural Relations Division

  • Medical Education Unit

  • Scientific Affairs Office

This initiative represents a preliminary step toward rationalizing the use of paper-based resources. It is envisioned to expand in the future to encompass broader aspects of both digital and physical waste management within the College

Waste Sorting and Recycling Stations

As part of its waste management policy and commitment to reducing resource waste, the College of Medicine – University of Mosul has implemented a set of environmentally conscious measures aimed at promoting a culture of sorting and recycling. These measures include:

Waste Sorting Stations:
Designated bins for collecting waste by type (paper, plastic, metal) have been distributed throughout various locations within the College. This facilitates initial waste segregation and minimizes mixed waste, thereby improving the efficiency of recycling processes.

Paper Recycling:

  • The College follows a system for shredding unused paper to ensure its proper recycling in alignment with sustainability principles and efforts to reduce resource loss.
  • An awareness poster has been prepared and displayed for students and staff to emphasize the importance of reducing consumption and encouraging the reuse of materials.

Waste Treatment:
The College’s Hazardous Waste Management Committee is responsible for developing and implementing a safe protocol for the disposal of liquids used in the bacteriology laboratory. This process is designed to ensure both environmental and public health safety https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L27ZGcNfrGGsh1LJ4ts94ZIQHVI5hkwp/view?usp=sharing

Electronic Waste Management:
With regard to electronic waste, the College has adopted a clear policy that includes the periodic replacement and maintenance of computer systems. This approach ensures optimal utilization of electronic devices and contributes to the reduction of e-waste in accordance with sustainable resource management practices.
