The department of Pediatrics
Vision:
Developing and increasing scientific and clinical information in the field of pediatrics for fourth, fifth-, and sixth-year students and developing scientific research in the field of pediatrics.
Mission:
Mechanisms through theoretical lectures for fourth- year students, theoretical lectures and clinical training for fifth-year students, giving tutorials and clinical teaching to sixth-year students.
Goals
Giving important theoretical information for fourth stage, important theoretical and clinical information to students in the fifth and sixth stages, with emphasis on accessing recent developments in this field and renewing the lectures in the fourth and fifth stages. At the end of the Pediatric department’s training program, the undergraduate student at the College of Medicine will be able to acquire the knowledge components of the following topics:
- • All common diseases in pediatrics.
- • Acquire the necessary skill to take a medical history of medical cases in pediatrics and do a clinical examination to obtain and analyze medical signs.
- • Possessing the basic knowledge necessary to order appropriate laboratory tests for various medical cases with the ability of analyzing the results.
- • Possessing the skills of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on infants and children, performing a spinal tap, and inserting a stomach tube.
- • Possess knowledge of the use of basic life-saving medications in pediatrics.
- • Holding scientific seminars on the latest developments in the field of pediatrics.
- • Performing scientific research in the field of pediatrics.
- • Serving the community through the work of the teaching staff in the children’s departments of hospitals.
- • Supervision and training for postgraduate students in the Iraqi and Arab Board of Pediatrics.
About the department of pediatrics
The Pediatrics department was established at the College of Medicine in 1994 after it was a branch affiliated with the Internal Medicine department. The late Professor Dr. Naji Abdel Rahman Naji was the first head of the department and it included 4 teaching staff at that time. The first Iraqi Board of Pediatrics course was accepted in 1988 at Al-Khansa Teaching Hospital for Women and Children, in addition to teaching the fourth stage theoretically.• The branch currently includes 13 teaching staff, 0ne at the professor’s level, and three at the assistant professor level and seven at the lecturer’s level.
