A Master’s Thesis in the College of Medicine Concludes that the Value of Oxidative Stress Measured by MDD is Higher in the Group of Patients with Hyperthyroidism

A master’s thesis of the Department of Pharmacology entitled “The effect of carbimazole on oxidative stress and some signs of inflammation in hyperthyroid patients” presented by the student Mays M. Qassim Al-Khayat was discussed in the College of Medicine on Thursday, 25th November 2021.

The thesis aimed to investigate the state of oxidative stress in the body and the state of total antioxidants in hyperthyroid patients and healthy ones and its relationship with thyroid hormones. It also aimed to investigate the effect of carbimazole on oxidative stress and some markers of inflammation as well as on thyroid hormones.

It was concluded that the value of oxidative stress measured by malondialdehyde is higher in the group of patients with hyperthyroidism than the control group, and the value of the total antioxidant status is lower compared to the control group. The outcome of the study (regarding the measurement of hyperthyroidism) also showed that in patients there is a noticeable increase of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine and also of thyroxine with a lack of secretion of thyroid stimulating hormone. It also showed a direct relationship between the value of oxidative stress with thyroid hormones and inverse the status of total antioxidants. Also, the treatment with carbimazole has a positive effect on the value of oxidative stress and the status of antioxidants, and thyroid hormones after two months of treatment.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof Dr Ahmed D. Bashi (chairman), Assistant Prof Dr Zaid M. Shindala (Member), Assistant Prof Dr Musa’b M. Khalaf (Member), and Assistant Prof Dr Qassim S. Al-Nuaimi (Member and Supervisor).

Part of the discussion was attended by the former President of University of Nineveh, Prof Dr Muzahim Q. Al-Khayat, the Dean of the College, Prof Dr Basil Mohammednather Saeed, the Scientific Vice-Dean, Assistant Prof Dr Humam Gh. Ibrahim, and the Administrative Vice-Dean, Assistant Prof Dr Hazim Kh. Al-Allaf. It was also attended by the Head of the Iraqi Academics Syndicate, Nineveh Department, some heads, rapporteurs and teaching staff of various scientific departments and a number of postgraduate students.

After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read including accepting the thesis with doing the necessary amendments to it and awarding the student a master’s degree.
