A Master’s Thesis in the College of Medicine Finds out that Vitamin D Deficiency Increases the Risk of Pre-Eclampsia by Five Times in Pregnant Women.

A master’s thesis in the Department of Medical Physiology, which was submitted by the student Alaa A. Qassim on Thursday 3rd March 2022, discussed the effect of vitamin D deficiency and its relationship to the occurrence of blood pressure (pre-eclampsia) in pregnant women.

The study aimed to estimate the level of vitamin D in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and those who are healthy. It aimed to find the association between vitamin D deficiency and pre-eclampsia in addition to evaluating the effect of pre-eclampsia on various body systems.

It found that the level of the mentioned vitamin was lower in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia compared to healthy pregnant women and that its deficiency increases the risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women by five times. In addition to proving the effect of pre-eclampsia on many body systems and that it causes a change in vital indicators for liver function, kidney function, and platelet count.

The discussion committee consisted of the Assistant Prof Dr Zahra A. Murtada (chairman), Assistant Prof Dr Omaima A. Ibrahim (Member), Lecturer Dr Raja A. Younis (Member), and Assistant Prof Dr Afraa M. Al-Amin (Member and Supervisor).

Part of the discussion was attended by the Scientific and Administrative Vice-Deans, the Assistant Prof Dr Humam Gh. Ibrahim, and the Assistant Lecturer Dr Karam T. Tawfiq. It was also attended by some heads and teaching staff of various scientific departments the head of the graduate studies division, and a number of postgraduate students.

After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read included accepting the thesis with the necessary amendments required to be made and awarding the student a master’s degree.
