Discussion of a Master’s Thesis at the College of Medicine/Department of Biochemistry
The College of Medicine at the University of Mosul held a discussion of a master’s thesis on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in the postgraduate hall. The thesis, titled “Validity of Different Alternative Indicators of Insulin Resistance in Predicting Type 2 Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes in a Group of Iraqis,” was presented by the student Ismail Muhammad Taqi Muhammad from the Department of Biochemistry.
Thesis Objectives
The thesis aimed to test the validity of nine alternative indicators of insulin resistance in diagnosing type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes in a sample of Mosul residents through a survey study conducted in different areas of the city and its surroundings. The study also investigated the prevalence of diabetes in the city and established reference values for these indicators.
Findings and Recommendations
The study recommended relying on the TyG index at the clinical level for early detection of diabetes. The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Raad Yahya Al-Hamdani and included Prof. Dr. Humam Ghanim Ibraahim, Dean of the College of Medicine; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Harith Al-Sa’ati; and Dr. Amjad Hazem Al-Nuaimi, who served as both a committee member and supervisor. The thesis was accepted with revisions.
The discussion was attended by the Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs, the Vice Dean of Administrative and Financial Affairs, and the Head of Postgraduate Studies at the college, as well as a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.
Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals
This thesis contributes to achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (Good Health and Well-being) and producing new knowledge in line with the fourth goal (Quality Education).
