Energy and Climate Change (EC)

In support of the Sustainable Development Goals and enhancing the data of the (Energy and Climate Change EC) within the GreenMetric classification, the college  of  medicine implemented several initiatives as follows:

Sustainability Initiatives and the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at the College

1. Energy Efficiency

  • Energy-efficient electrical appliances were adopted, relying on environmentally friendly technologies, most notably the use of LED lighting across various facilities.
  • Solar panels were installed to provide an alternative and sustainable source of energy.
  • Effective thermal insulation solutions were implemented, such as the use of false ceilings in classrooms and halls, to enhance energy efficiency.

2. Smart Building Features

Several facilities are equipped with modern smart building technologies, including:

  • Security systems with electronic locking doors.
  • Biometric fingerprint devices for attendance registration.
  • CCTV surveillance systems.
  • Fire detectors and sensors to enhance overall safety.

3. Indoor Environmental Quality

  • The working and learning environments were improved by providing appropriate, low-energy lighting in all classrooms and laboratories, contributing to user comfort and improved indoor air quality.

4. Sustainable Site Design

  • The campus includes green spaces and gardens that help improve air quality and mitigate the local climate.
  • Dedicated pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths were established to reduce reliance on conventional vehicles and promote sustainable mobility.

5. Waste Management

  • Designated bins for waste segregation (paper, plastic, and laboratory waste) were made available, fostering a culture of recycling and contributing to waste reduction.

6. Sustainable Transportation

  • Dedicated bicycle parking areas and safe cycling paths were provided within the campus, encouraging students and staff to adopt environmentally friendly transportation methods.

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Goal Description
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being Improved indoor environments through energy-efficient lighting and enhanced air quality contribute to users’ comfort and overall well-being.
Goal 4: Quality Education A safe and comfortable learning environment, supported by effective lighting and modern educational technologies, enhances the educational experience.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy The adoption of energy-saving appliances, such as LED lighting, and the integration of solar panels contribute to clean and sustainable energy use.
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Incorporating smart building technologies, such as electronic locks, biometric systems, surveillance cameras, and sensors, reflects a modern and sustainable infrastructure.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities The creation of green spaces, walkways, and bicycle lanes, as well as the provision of bike parking, supports reduced vehicle use and sustainable campus mobility.
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production The implementation of waste segregation systems promotes recycling practices and reduces overall waste production.
Goal 13: Climate Action Thermal insulation measures, renewable energy use, and promotion of sustainable transportation help reduce the carbon footprint and support climate resilience.
