Head of the Department of Pediatrics Supervising a Master’s Thesis in the College of Nursing Discusses the Assessment of Risk Factors Associated with Convulsive Seizures

A master’s thesis submitted by the student Ahmed I. Muhammad al-Jubouri was discussed in the College of Nursing, University of Mosul, and entitled “Evaluation of the risk factors associated with thermal convulsions bouts, the first event in children’s educational hospitals, the witness and case study” on Monday, 16th August 2021. The discussion committee consisted of Prof Dr Salwa H. Al-Mukhtar (Chairman), Assistant Prof Dr Bashar Sh. Mustafa (Member), Dr Rayan I. Khalil (Member), and Head of the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Mosul, Assistant Prof Dr Riyadh A. Al-Obaidi (Member and Supervisor).

The thesis included that thermal bouts are the most common type of problem in children and represent a large part of emergency department visits each year and affect approximately (2% to 5%) of children around the world between the ages of six months and five years.

It concluded that low birth weight, prematurity, short duration of breastfeeding, artificial feeding, positive family history of thermal convulsions bouts, anaemia, caesarean section, passive smoking during pregnancy and high temperature are risk factors suggestive of first thermal convulsions bouts.

It recommended that breastfeeding be encouraged at least for the first six months of life.

After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read including accepting the thesis after making amendments to it and awarding the student a master’s degree.
