On Thursday, November 23, 2023, the Human Rights Law Branch at the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis on the executive and supervisory jurisdiction of the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq/a comparative study, part of which was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Wissam Nemat Ibrahim Al-Saadi, Dean of the College, and a number of members of the College Council. The thesis submitted by researcher Susan Jamal Jiyad in the branch of human rights law addressed the role of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission in managing and monitoring the electoral process compared to the Independent Electoral Commission in South Africa and the Independent Electoral Commission in Tunisia, especially after the legal amendments to the election laws from 2019 to 2023 in All of the comparison countries.
The letter aims to explain that elections in Iraq are held every four years, while in South Africa every five years, subject to renewal. In Tunisia, elections are held every six years, not subject to renewal. As for the members of the Board of Commissioners in Iraq, their number is 9 members of judges, and in Tunisia there are 7 members. South Africa 5 members.
