Symposium. Controlling Stray Dogs by Using Surgical and Hormonal Methods

Under the patronage of President of University of Mosul Prof. Dr.Qusay Kamaladdin Al-Ahmady and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine Prof. Dr. Dhafer Mohammad Aziz. The Department of Surgery and Theriogenology, College of Veterinary Medicine held its third scientific symposium entitled “Controlling Stray Dogs by Using Surgical and Hormonal Methods” on Wednesday 22ndJanuary, 2020.The symposium was attended by the President of University of Mosul, Rector Assistant for Scientific Affairs of University of Mosul, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, a number of deans of collegesand a number of professors and doctors from the University of Mosul.The symposium started with speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Dhafer Muhammad Aziz. Then, Professor Dr. Muneer S. Taha delivered the first session entitled “The Animal Welfare in Islamic and International Law”. The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Omer Faysal Fadel, entitled “The Best Way of Controlling the Stray Dog Population”. The third and fourth lectures were delivered by Prof. Dr. Layth mahmoud Alkattan and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abdulelah which were focused on the potential uses of surgical and hormonal methods to control stray dog population.At the close of the symposium there were questions and discussion were held on these lectures and determine that dog overpopulation is a serious problem across Iraq and Mosul city. The symposium distinguishes the importance of controlling stray dog populations without causing unnecessary animal suffering. Surgical and hormonal fertility control is increasingly encouraged as more effective way to manage stray dog populations.
