A Master’s thesis titled “Diagnostic Study of Contagious Ecthyma in Sheep and Goats” by the student Aisha Faisal Ibrahim, supervised by Asst. Prof. Mohammed Abdulmohsen Saleh, was defended on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The examination committee consisted of:

The present diagnostic study was conducted on sheep and goats in Nineveh Governorate to confirm infection with Contagious Ecthyma based on the characteristic clinical signs and confirmatory laboratory tests. The study also included an analysis of the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the causative virus. The disease has recorded high prevalence rates in recent years in Iraq and the region, causing significant economic losses in livestock production.
The results showed an overall infection rate of 22%, distributed as 19% in sheep and 25% in goats. The findings indicated that clinical signs can be relied upon for initial diagnosis, while molecular testing proved to be the most accurate and rapid method compared with other serological assays used in the study.
After the student confidently defended her thesis and addressed the committee’s questions, the thesis was approved.
