The Department of Financial and Banking Sciences at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, discusses a Master’s thesis on the impact of political risks on the performance of international investment portfolios

The Department of Financial and Banking Sciences at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, discussed on Wednesday, September 2, 2026  a master’s thesis titled “Political Risks and Their Impact on International Investment Portfolio Performance: An Analytical Study of a Sample of International Financial Markets with Reference to Iraq,” submitted by student Daham Firas Badran Al-Enezi in the Discussion Hall – Department of Economics.

The study aimed to illustrate the extent to which fluctuations in the political and institutional environment affect the return and risk levels of international investment portfolios. Additionally, it provided an empirical comparison highlighting the differences in how emerging and frontier financial markets respond to political variables and their implications for investment performance.

The study reached a set of conclusions, most notably that political stability does not act as a constant factor across all financial markets; while it serves as a supporting element for investment in frontier markets, it may reflect institutional stagnation in certain emerging markets, confirming that the pricing of political risks varies depending on the nature of the economic and institutional environment. The results also indicated that emerging markets possess a greater capacity to absorb political shocks and price them into investor decisions, whereas frontier markets remain more vulnerable due to their structural fragility facing sudden political shifts.

The examination committee consisted of: Professor Dr. Hashem Mohammed Al-Arkoub, College of Administration and Economics / University of Mosul, Chair, Assistant Professor Dr. Hala Sami Khudair, College of Administration and Economics / University of Mosul, Member, Assistant Professor Dr. Ashti Abdul Sattar Abdul Ghani, College of Administration and Economics / University of Mosul, Member, Professor Dr. Rafia Ibrahim Al-Hamdani, College of Administration and Economics / University of Mosul, Member and Supervisor.
