The Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, discussed a doctoral dissertation entitled “The Impact of Institutional Quality on the Relationship Between Rentier Revenues, Economic Growth, and Employment in Resource-Rich Countries with Reference to Iraq,” presented by the student Zahraa Khalil Ali, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in Discussion Hall No. (2).
The study aimed to estimate the direct linear and non-linear impacts of institutional quality and rentier revenues on economic growth and employment, as well as to test the moderating role of institutional quality in the relationship between rentier revenues and economic performance, contributing to a deeper understanding of how to utilize rentier resources to achieve sustainable economic development.
The dissertation concluded with several key findings, most notably that institutional quality represents a decisive factor in explaining the variation in economic performance among countries, as its improvement enhances economic growth and increases employment opportunities. It also showed that the impact of rentier revenues on economic growth and employment varies according to the level of institutional development, with high-quality institutions helping direct rentier revenues toward productive investment, human capital development, and economic diversification, whereas weak institutional environments reinforce structural imbalances.
