A doctoral thesis at the College of Archaeology on (archaeology data in the Diyala plains in light of archaeological discoveries)
On Monday, September 18, 2023, in the hall of Dr. Behnam Abu Al-Sof in the college, the Department of Archaeology at the College of Archeology at the University of Mosul discussed the doctoral thesis, part of the thesis was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Jaber Khalil/ Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and a number of college staff.
The study presented by the Ph.D. candidate (Ghassan Saleh Ahmed) dealt with a large area of central Iraq, specifically east of the Tigris River, known in archaeological circles as the “Diyala Plains.” It had in the past a long history full of events and cultural achievements extending from prehistoric times, and in the present, it is full of people. Populated in many of its departments.
The study dealt with archaeological data in the Diyala plains in various fields and sciences including arts of all kinds such as sculpture and architecture in all its forms. This is also the case with regard to pottery, most notably the crimson pottery which was and still is a feature of the Diyala region. The same is true with regard to cuneiform texts and other. It contains legal mathematical, administrative, economic, social, and other contents, in addition to science, specifically chemistry, and its development, such as the Baghdad battery.
The aim of the thesis was that we can say that the areas that abound in this region, represented by the Diyala plains, represent a number of eras that passed through Iraq, extending over thousands of years in which different dynasties, kingdoms and civilizations arose, and the data they left us in various aspects of civilization, and their condition as we have shown, are worthy of study and scrutiny.
The discussion/ viva committee was chaired by the emeritus professor Dr. Nawala Ahmed Mahmoud, and the membership of Professor Dr. Hussein Zaher Hammoud and Professor Dr. Kazem Abdullah Attiya/ University of Baghdad/ College of Education for Girls/ Department of History, Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Ghani Abdul Rahman, and the assistant professor Dr. Ahmed Mayser Fadel, with the supervision and membership of the emeritus professor Dr. Jaber Khalil Ibrahim.
