**Doctoral Dissertation at the College of Basic Education Explores Cultural Patterns in the Poetry of the Naqa’id Poets during the Umayyad Era**

The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a doctoral dissertation entitled *”Cultural Patterns in the Poetry of the Naqa’id Poets during the Umayyad Era”* on Sunday, 28 June 2026, in Umm Al-Rabieen Hall at the College.

The dissertation, submitted by Ahmed Thamer Ghafouri Al-Mashhadani from the Department of Arabic Language, aimed to examine the cultural patterns reflected in the poetry of the Naqa’id poets during the Umayyad era. It sought to identify their manifestations and the mechanisms through which they operate within poetic discourse, viewing them as cultural systems closely associated with the political, social, and cultural conflicts of the period. The study also explored their role in shaping meaning and their relationship to the cultural structure that produced the poetic discourse.

The research examined several cultural patterns, including the political pattern, class pattern, tribal solidarity pattern, religious pattern, masculine pattern, and moral pattern. This was achieved through the analysis of selected poetic texts, revealing how these patterns function in constructing poetic discourse and demonstrating their connection to the political, social, and cultural contexts of the Umayyad era.

The study reached several significant findings, most notably that the poetry of the Naqa’id poets was not merely a poetic rivalry but represented a cultural discourse that reflected the deeply rooted underlying patterns embedded in the collective consciousness of Umayyad society. It revealed the presence of political, class, tribal, religious, masculine, and moral patterns and their role in shaping poetic discourse and reproducing prevailing social values. The dissertation further concluded that Naqa’id poetry constitutes an important cultural document for understanding the intellectual and social structure of Umayyad society.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Yadkar Latif Jamshir, with Professor Dr. Yousif Suleiman Ismail, Professor Dr. Sharif Bashir Ahmed, Professor Dr. Iman Khalifa Hamed, and Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Younis Saleh serving as members. Professor Dr. Saleh Mohammed Hassan Erdiny served as both a committee member and the dissertation supervisor.
