The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a training course entitled “Causes of Stubbornness in Children and Methods of Addressing It,” held over three days from October 27 to 29, 2026.
The course was presented by:
  • Assistant Lecturer Shahad Hazim Ahmed
  • Assistant Lecturer Marah Muneer Ahmed
  • Assistant Lecturer Tahani Ibrahim Abdulhameed
  • Assistant Lecturer Rana Mohammad Sami Fadhil
The course aimed to introduce the concept of stubbornness in children and its key psychological, educational, and social causes. It sought to enhance participants’ abilities to understand stubborn behavior, distinguish between normal developmental stubbornness and behaviors requiring educational intervention, and identify appropriate psychological and educational methods to handle and address it effectively.
The sessions addressed the primary causes of stubbornness in children, including parenting styles, overindulgence, excessive strictness, the desire for independence and self-assertion, as well as the impact of the child’s surrounding environment and family dynamics on the emergence and persistence of this behavior. Additionally, it reviewed practical strategies for addressing stubborn behavior, such as calm dialogue, positive reinforcement, avoiding harsh punishment and shouting, providing a safe family and educational environment, and fostering cooperation between families and educational institutions.
Furthermore, the course emphasized the importance of spreading psychological and educational awareness regarding sound child-handling practices. It highlighted the need to develop the skills of educators and teachers in managing unwanted behaviors, thereby promoting children’s healthy psychological and social development and cultivating a positive educational environment built on respect, understanding, and constructive guidance.
The objectives of the course align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
  1. Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, by supporting children’s mental health and fostering their healthy psychological and social development.
  2. Goal 4: Quality Education, by enhancing effective educational practices and providing a safe, supportive learning environment for children.
  3. Goal 5: Gender Equality, by instilling principles of equality in child-rearing practices, free from discrimination between males and females in upbringing and guidance.
  4. Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by promoting a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, while adopting positive educational methods for conflict resolution and violence reduction in family and educational settings.
