M.Sc. thesis of Israa Nasir Abood

M.Sc. Thesis Final Defense

As part of the academic activities of our college and the Department of Computer Science, Israa Nasir Abood has successfully passed her M.Sc. final defense of a thesis entitled “Classification of Waste Using the Transformative Learning Method” on Sept. 11, 2023.

Israa’s thesis focused on the classification of images of solid waste using artificial intelligence techniques, which showed efficient performance using the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the acquired knowledge that already exists in the trained models of convolutional neural networks through transfer learning, which contributes to waste management, reducing the impact on the environment, and promoting sustainable development.

Employing artificial intelligence techniques, represented by utilizing transfer learning (TL) models, in classifying solid waste (paper, cardboard, clothing, glass, metal, and plastic), which helps in directing it to appropriate recycling processes, reducing the consumption of natural resources, and preserving the environment by using modern technologies.

The goal of the thesis was to use deep learning algorithms and transfer learning mechanisms and prove that the transfer learning approach can be an effective way to adjust models to solve this problem and reach an accurate model in waste classification. The proposed system can be employed in service departments and municipal institutions.

The scientific committee included the following members:
