Department of Environmental Sciences

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits and aligned with the Bologna Process. The program provides students with a strong foundation in the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, and geosciences) and fundamental environmental principles, followed by advanced study in core environmental disciplines, including ecology, environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, pollution control, and climate change management. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with laboratory experiments, field training, environmental impact assessment (EIA) methodologies, research activities, and project-based learning to develop technical competence and professional skills. Graduates acquire the analytical, practical, communication, and problem-solving abilities required to monitor and assess environmental conditions and to support the protection and sustainable management of ecosystems. The program also prepares graduates for professional careers, lifelong learning, and postgraduate study while promoting ethical responsibility, teamwork, innovation, service to society, and sustainable development.

The Environmental Science Program aims to:

  • Provide students with a comprehensive scientific education that establishes a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, physics, and the core disciplines of environmental science while fostering scientific reasoning, laboratory skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Prepare graduates for successful professional careers and postgraduate studies by developing their knowledge and ability to analyze, monitor, manage, and mitigate environmental pollution and environmental degradation in accordance with national and international environmental standards and ethical practices.
  • Develop students’ technical and practical competencies through laboratory analysis, field investigations, environmental impact assessment (EIA) and modeling, undergraduate research, and the effective use of modern analytical equipment and geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Enhance graduates’ communication, leadership, teamwork, and project management skills, enabling them to supervise environmental management projects effectively, apply quality-assurance practices, and work effectively in multidisciplinary scientific teams.
  • Promote scientific research, sustainability, biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness, occupational health, and lifelong learning while preparing competent environmental scientists capable of meeting labor-market demands.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Environmental Science by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science program is governed by the regulations and admission policies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved admission criteria applicable to science and environmental programs.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Meeting the minimum academic requirements for graduation in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
  • Successful completion of all required laboratory work, field training, and other practical components of the program.
  • Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation as approved by MOHESR and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the transfer of academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science program, graduates are expected to achieve the following outcomes:

  • GO1: An ability to identify, formulate, analyze, and solve environmental problems by applying principles of environmental chemistry, biology, and ecological sciences.
  • GO2: An ability to analyze and interpret environmental data, assess ecological risks, and design sustainable management plans that meet specified needs within safety, economic, cultural, and environmental constraints.
  • GO3: An ability to conduct standardized field sampling, operate modern laboratory equipment, verify environmental data quality, and carry out environmental impact assessments to draw scientifically sound conclusions.
  • GO4: An ability to communicate complex environmental issues and findings effectively to diverse audiences, policymakers, and scientific bodies.
  • GO5: An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in environmental practice and make informed judgments regarding resource conservation, pollution mitigation, and public safety.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science are qualified to pursue professional careers in a wide range of public and private sectors, including:

  • Environment and health directorates across various governorates.
  • Ministry of Water Resources and water purification and treatment facilities.
  • Engineering and environmental consulting firms, including roles as environmental auditors or EIA analysts.
  • Oil, gas, and energy facilities, particularly within Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) departments.
  • Municipalities, urban planning offices, and waste management facilities.
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on nature conservation and sustainable development.
  • Laboratories specializing in chemical, biological, environmental, and toxicity testing.
  • Research institutions, protected reserves, and higher education centers.

Postgraduate Studies

  • Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Environmental Science (offered locally at the University of Mosul).
  • Master’s degree in Environmental Biotechnology or Ecotoxicology.
  • Master’s degree in Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Development.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Environmental Sciences or related disciplines.

Professional Development

  • Professional training and certification pathways in environmental auditing and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

The Environmental Science Program follows the examination, assessment, and grading regulations approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Student performance is evaluated through:

  • Continuous assessment, including periodic quizzes, assignments, and laboratory activities.
  • Midterm examinations.
  • Final examinations, including theoretical and practical/laboratory assessments.
  • Laboratory reports, field-sampling records, and field-trip logs.
  • Case studies and seminar presentations on environmental topics.
  • Summer training placements at environmental directorates, municipal treatment facilities, or state industrial facilities.
  • Evaluation and defense of the graduation research project before an academic committee.
  • Compliance with academic integrity regulations, including policies on academic misconduct and plagiarism.

To be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science, students must successfully fulfill all requirements in accordance with the regulations of MOHESR and the University of Mosul, including:

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits and all compulsory/elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements, including the required cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Successful completion and public defense of the graduation research project, along with the required field and laboratory logs and summer training requirements.
  • Fulfillment of all academic and administrative requirements for the formal conferral of the degree.

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program delivered in accordance with the Bologna Process. The program adopts a student-centered teaching and learning approach that integrates laboratory analysis, field-based ecosystem mapping, and specialized ecological modeling applications. Students develop practical competence in the use of modern environmental and analytical instruments, together with spatial-analysis and statistical software, to support professional readiness for environmental protection agencies and environmentally responsible industries.

Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the B.Sc. in Environmental Science program. Responsibilities include overseeing curriculum delivery, monitoring students’ attainment of the Graduate Outcomes, coordinating laboratory resources and field activities, and ensuring alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance requirements, MOHESR regulations, and relevant program accreditation standards. The Coordinator works with faculty members to review and update the curriculum in response to emerging environmental challenges and developments in ecosystem and climate monitoring.
