The Symposium of the Department of Medicine Recommends the Necessity of Largest Possible Proportion of Citizens Should Be Included in Vaccinations in Order to Achieve Herd Immunity

The annual scientific symposium of the Department of Medicine discussed coexistence with the covid-19 epidemic and its repercussions on the various body systems.

The symposium recommended continuing to wear masks in crowded places even in the case of completing two doses of vaccination. It also recommended conducting laboratory tests related to the covid pandemic especially blood indicators tests (leukocytes, lymphocytes, and platelets) for patients with severe infection. The media was also urged to excel in educating people about the pandemic. It is also necessary to include the largest possible proportion of citizens in vaccinations in order to achieve herd immunity.

The symposium, which was inaugurated by the Head of the Media and Public Relations Division, Chief Engineer, Hasan Yز Abdullah, began with verses from the Holy Qur’an, recited by the rapporteur of the Department of Surgery, the Lecturer Dr Muhannad A. Al-Nuaimi, and then an opening lecture by the Head of the Department, Prof Dr Khalid N. Al-Kherro entitled “Frequently Asked Questions about COVID 19 “. After a short break, the first scientific session started and headed by Assistant Prof Dr Ismail D. Saeed. It included three lectures. The first one was by Assistant Prof Dr Rami M. Al-Hayali entitled “Respiratory System: The Primary Target of COVID-19, What Happens In”. The second lecture was for the Prof Dr Khalid N. Al-Kherro entitled “Reflection of COVID-19 on Blood”. The third lecture was for the Assistant Prof Dr Jassim M. Tayeb and his lecture entitled “Reflection of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular System”.

After that, the second scientific session was launched under the chairmanship of Prof Dr Khalid N. Al-Kherro, and it also consisted of three lectures. The first one was by the Lecturer Dr Abdullah Z. Al-Yuzbaki, and his lecture entitled “GI and Liver during COVID-19”. The second lecture was for the Lecturer Dr Wael Th. Younis entitled “Effect of COVID-19 on Endocrine and Diabetes”. Then the final lecture was for the Lecturer Dr Safiya A. Al-Chalabi entitled “Care of Psychological Aspects of a Patient with COVID-19”. At the end of each session, there was a chance for questions, discussions and interpositions by the attendees.

On the sidelines of the work, the former Head of the Department, Assistant Prof Dr Ismail D. Saeed and Dr Muhammad Kh. Yassin were honored with a shield of appreciation for each of them on the occasion of their retirement.

The symposium was held under the patronage and attendance of the President of the University, Prof Dr Qusay K. Al-Ahmadi, and in the presence of the Scientific Vice-President, Prof Dr Munir S. Taha, and the Deputy Dean, Assistant Prof Dr Humam Gh. Ibrahim. It was also attended by some members of the councils of the medical colleges of Mosul and Nineveh Universities, the Head of the Iraqi Physicians Syndicate, Nineveh Department, Dr Muhammad S. Al-Houry as well as dozens of academic staff from the two mentioned universities, a number of specialized doctors of the Nineveh Health Department, and a group of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
