A research paper by a faculty member in the College of Political Science was published
The researcher Somia Ghanem Maturud has published her paper titled “Challenges of Citizenship between Islamic and Contemporary Political Thought” in issue 56 of the Regional Studies Journal. The research aims to explore the concept of citizenship in terms of its historical origins and development in Western thought first. Then, it examines the attempts made by contemporary Islamic thought to conceptualize and establish citizenship in Islamic societies, along with the significant challenges accompanying the concept. The study’s importance lies in the emergence of various perspectives and intellectual propositions that addressed the concept from different viewpoints, reflecting diverse references and ideologies adopted by scholars and thinkers from the West in general or specifically by Arab Muslims. The research is divided into two main sections: the first section discusses the concept of citizenship in contemporary political thought, while the second section explores the concept of citizenship in Islamic thought and the major challenges associated with it. The study concludes that citizenship is a political, relative, and transitional value, not an end in itself demanded by the state or the nation. Instead, it represents a transitional stage through which the state aims to elevate the individual from the psychological and cultural self to the legal and rights-based self. This legal self forms a crucial cornerstone in the construction of a civil society, emphasizing values such as subject loyalty and ethical allegiance to authority or the state.
