Master’s Thesis at the College of Political Science, University of Mosul, Aims to Uncover the Efforts of Shaping an “Israeli” Identity-Based Memory Through Secondary and Preparatory Education Curricula by Erasing the Memory and National Identity of Jewish Immigrants to “Israel” – Submitted by Palestinian Student Nour Fawaz Atiya Under the “Study in Iraq” Scholarship Program

In the presence of the University of Mosul President, Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and the Dean of the College of Political Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suhaib Khalid Jassim Al-Taie, the Master’s thesis titled:

“Shaping Memory and Identity in ‘Israeli’ Education Curricula: A Case Study of Secondary Education Curricula”

was discussed on Sunday, 20 July 2025. The thesis was submitted by Palestinian student Nour Fawaz Atiya under the “Study in Iraq” scholarship initiative.

The thesis explored the mechanisms of building a unified national “Israeli” memory and identity by analyzing the values of memory and identity—both quantitatively and qualitatively—in selected samples from “Israeli” educational curricula.

Its main objective was to uncover the attempts to shape an “Israeli” identity-based memory through preparatory and secondary education curricula by stripping the memory and erasing the national identity of Jewish immigrants to “Israel,” while seeking to construct and instill an alternative “Israeli” memory.

The findings revealed that the more the Zionist elites sensed the inability of their ethno-religious identity to unify the diverse Jewish groups, the more they intensified their practices of politicizing and distorting the collective Jewish memory in order to manufacture a unified national “Israeli” memory and identity—especially through educational curricula.

The examination committee consisted of Asst. Prof. Dr. Yazan Khellouq Mohammed (Chair), Asst. Prof. Mohammed Saleh Shateeb (Member), Asst. Prof. Dr. Khairallah Subhan Al-Jubouri (Member), and Prof. Dr. Waleed Salem Mohammed (Member and Supervisor).

The defense session was attended by several members of the College Council, a number of current and retired faculty members, and a group of postgraduate students.

Following the discussion, the committee’s decision was read, which included the acceptance of the thesis—pending the necessary amendments—and the awarding of the Master’s degree to the student.
