A Joint Research Paper by Faculty Members of the College of Political Science, University of Mosul, on Satellite Debris as a Strategic Weapon in Hybrid Warfare and Outer Space, Accepted for Publication in a Journal Indexed in Clarivate’s Global Databases

In pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, Goal Four: Quality Education, Goal Sixteen: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Goal Seventeen: Partnerships for the Goals, and in cooperation with the Studies and Planning Department / Sustainable Development Unit at the University of Mosul Presidency, the joint research paper authored by Professor Dr. Marwan Salim Ali, Administrative Assistant Dean of the College of Political Science; Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Hashim Dhanoon; and Lecturer Dr. Hind Nizar Nafi, both faculty members of the International Relations Branch, was accepted for publication on 7 October 2026. The paper is entitled “Satellite Debris as a Threat to Space Security” and is to be published in the Journal of Law and Political Sciences.

The study investigates the strategic role of space debris as an instrument in hybrid warfare and anti-access and area-denial (A2/AD) strategies.

It aims to analyse the functional transformation of space debris from mere technological waste into a “silent weapon” used for concealment and orbital disruption.

The study also examines the significant gap between advances in military technology and the rigidity of international legal frameworks, with particular emphasis on the geopolitical competition among major powers—the United States, Russia, and China—in the field of space surveillance and tracking.

The College Deanship commended the researchers’ scientific efforts, particularly given that the aforementioned journal is indexed in Clarivate’s global databases, and wished all faculty members continued academic excellence and success.
