On Thursday, July 30, 2026, the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed the Master’s thesis entitled “International Liability Arising from Ecocide – An Analytical Study”, submitted by the student Noor Mohammed Yunus Khidhr, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ahmed Tariq Yassin.

The thesis examined the concept of ecocide as one of the modern legal concepts aimed at enhancing the criminal protection of the environment. It explored the adequacy of the rules of international law and the Rome Statute in confronting severe environmental damage, while reviewing international efforts to recognize ecocide as an independent international crime, and demonstrating the need to develop the rules of international liability and expand the scope of criminal protection for the environment.

The study aimed to clarify the concept of ecocide and its legal nature, analyze the legal basis for international liability arising therefrom, assess the adequacy of the rules of international law and the Rome Statute in protecting the environment, as well as review international efforts to recognize it as an independent international crime, and outline mechanisms for activating international liability and enhancing criminal protection for the environment.
