On Tuesday, 7 July 2026, the College of Law at the University of Mosul witnessed the defense of the doctoral dissertation entitled “Obstacles to Water Security Sustainability: A Study within the Framework of the Provisions of Public International Law”, presented by the student Ahmed Zaki Habib Al-Khattabi, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ahmed Tariq Yassin.

The dissertation highlighted the most prominent legal, political, economic, environmental, and security challenges hindering the achievement of sustainable water security, while clarifying their impact on the effectiveness of international rules governing shared water resources. It also addressed the legal and institutional mechanisms capable of addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable water management, taking the Tigris and Euphrates basins as a practical model.

The study aimed to analyze the international legal framework regulating shared water resources, and to clarify the impact of armed conflicts and climate change on exacerbating water crises, in addition to presenting legal and institutional proposals that contribute to achieving fair and sustainable management of water resources, thereby enhancing the protection of the right to water for present and future generations.
