Master’s Thesis at the College of Law, University of Mosul, Examines the Legal Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers

On Sunday, 16 August 2026, the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Legal Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers: A Study in the Provisions of International Human Rights Law”, submitted by researcher Zina Ghanem Mohsen Al-Badrani, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Alia Ghazi Taher Al-Atraqji.

The thesis examined the legal protection of the rights of migrant workers within the framework of international human rights law, in light of the growing phenomenon of international migration and the legal and humanitarian issues it raises. It clarified the concepts of migration and migrant workers, distinguishing them from displacement and asylum, and addressed their legal status in relation to the principle of state sovereignty. The study also explored the international legal basis for the protection of this group under international human rights instruments and International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, particularly the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (1990), along with international monitoring mechanisms and the challenges that limit the effectiveness of the protection afforded to them.

The study aimed to identify the legal basis for protecting the rights of migrant workers under relevant international and regional instruments, to determine the extent to which they enjoy the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed under international human rights law, and to assess the effectiveness of international, regional, and national mechanisms concerned with protecting their rights and their capacity to ensure effective legal protection and safeguard their human dignity.

The examination committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Raqeeb Mohammed Jassim – Chair

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Suha Hamid Salim – Member

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Fares Mohammed Hussein – Member

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Alia Ghazi Taher Al-Atraqji – Member and Supervisor

This study comes within the framework of the College of Law at the University of Mosul’s commitment to contemporary legal and humanitarian issues, and its efforts to explore ways to enhance legal protection for vulnerable groups in accordance with international human rights standards.
