The College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed, on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the master’s thesis titled “The Complementarity between Human Rights and Democracy in Building a Sustainable Society (A Study in Light of the Iraqi Constitution of 2005)” , presented by the student Jawan Fares Nasser Hussein, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Rifal Hassan Hamid.

The thesis addressed the complementary relationship between human rights and democracy in building a sustainable society in light of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq of 2005, by clarifying the concepts and constitutional foundations of human rights and democracy, analyzing the extent to which they are enshrined in the Constitution and their impact on the realization of rights and freedoms, particularly economic and social rights and the right to a healthy environment, as well as examining the role of the judiciary, especially the Administrative Court and the Federal Supreme Court, in protecting rights and consolidating the rule of law and democratic practice.

The thesis aimed to demonstrate the extent to which the 2005 Constitution has succeeded in achieving complementarity between human rights and democracy, to reveal the effectiveness of constitutional guarantees in the Iraqi reality, to illustrate the impact of this complementarity on achieving justice, stability, participation, and the rule of law, leading to the building of a sustainable society, while highlighting the role of the judiciary in promoting these goals.

The discussion committee consisted of Professor Dr. Lubna Khamis Mahdi, Director General of the Directorate of Research and Development at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, as Chair. The College of Law hosted the Chair of the committee to participate in the discussion via cyberspace using the Google Meet platform, along with Professor Dr. Mohammed Younis Al-Sayegh as a member, and Lecturer Dr. Saad Salem Sultan as a member.

This discussion comes within the framework of the College of Law at the University of Mosul’s commitment to specialized scientific research and the promotion of studies addressing issues of human rights, democracy, the rule of law, and sustainable development.
