Scientific Symposium: “Hantavirus Disease”

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmood Al‑Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, the College of Veterinary Medicine / University of Mosul, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit, organized a scientific symposium titled “Hantavirus Disease” on Monday, 29 June 2026, with the attendance of faculty members, researchers, students, and individuals interested in human and veterinary health.

The symposium program included three scientific lectures addressing various aspects of Hantavirus disease, presented as follows:

First Lecture: 

Prof. Dr. Dhiaa Mohammed Taher, titled “Hantavirus Disease: History and Global Epidemiology”, in which he reviewed the emergence of the disease, key milestones in its spread, and major outbreaks recorded worldwide.

Second Lecture: 

Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ali Hamad, titled “Hantaviruses: Classification and Documented Strains”, discussing the scientific classification of Hantaviruses, the most recognized strains, and their characteristics.

Third Lecture: 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Khudhr Jassim Hussein, titled “Hantavirus Disease: Transmission, Clinical Forms, Diagnosis, and Control”, highlighting modes of transmission, major clinical signs, laboratory diagnostic methods, and essential prevention and control measures.

The symposium aimed to introduce participants to Hantavirus disease, its causes, modes of transmission, and potential risks to humans, in addition to presenting the latest scientific approaches in diagnosis, prevention, and control contributing to improved health awareness and strengthening preventive culture within the community.

This symposium comes as part of the College’s ongoing scientific activities aimed at disseminating scientific knowledge and promoting health and community awareness, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well‑Being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).

At the conclusion of the symposium, the floor was opened for discussion, allowing participants to exchange scientific perspectives and address inquiries—enriching the scientific dialogue on the disease and mechanisms to limit its spread.

Objectives of the Symposium

The symposium aimed to:

  • Introducing Hantavirus disease, its causes, and modes of transmission
  • Clarify whether it poses a risk to humans
  • Present the latest scientific approaches in diagnosis, prevention, and control
  • Contribute to raising health awareness and strengthening preventive culture within the community

This symposium comes as part of the ongoing scientific activities organized by the College of Veterinary Medicine, aimed at disseminating scientific knowledge and promoting community health awareness, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well‑Being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).
