The College of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Mosul held the scientific workshop entitled “The Role of Afforestation in Building a Green and Sustainable Future in Iraq,” on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, National Afforestation Day.

Presented by agricultural engineer Hawraa Mishal Al-Lahibi

I discussed the methods that must be available to obtain a green and sustainable future in Iraq by following several steps, including attention to protecting the environment and preserving natural resources such as water and soil. We can plant more trees and establish gardens and parks to improve air quality and provide spaces for relaxation, and the use of renewable energy must be encouraged, such as Solar and wind energy, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, enhancing environmental awareness, and encouraging people to participate in preserving the environment through education and awareness.

I touched on the role of afforestation on health and climate because it has an important role in individual health and climate for the individual. Trees perform the process of reverse respiration, absorbing CO2 and excreting O2, which improves air quality and reduces its pollution. They also provide shade and reduce temperatures in urban places.

As for the climate, trees absorb Co2 and store it in their trunks and branches, which contributes to reducing heat retention and climate change. Trees also help preserve soil and reduce erosion.

It aimed to spread environmental awareness by increasing green spaces, as it has a major role in purifying the air, fighting pollution and climate change, and introducing the value of agriculture in all its forms and its effective role in achieving the environmental vision in line with the country’s national vision.
