The Bachelor’s Degree Program offered by the Department of Geography, College of Education for Humanities, University of Mosul, is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits and aligned with the requirements of the Bologna Process.
The program provides students with a strong academic foundation in physical geography, human geography, and Geographic Information Systems. It also covers modern geographical technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, and statistical and spatial analysis. In addition, the program addresses topics related to population, cities, climate, natural resources, the environment, planning, and spatial development.
The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications, laboratory work, field studies, training, research activities, and project-based learning to develop students’ academic and technical competencies and professional skills. Graduates acquire skills in spatial analysis and interpretation, geographic data collection and processing, map production, and the use of modern geospatial technologies, as well as communication, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The program also prepares graduates for careers in education, urban and regional planning, Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, natural and environmental resource management, and governmental and research institutions. It further prepares them for postgraduate studies and lifelong learning while promoting ethical responsibility, teamwork, innovation, commitment to community service, and support for sustainable development.

The Geography Program aims to:
- Provide students with a comprehensive geographical education that establishes a strong academic foundation in physical, human, and regional geography and geospatial technologies while developing scientific and critical thinking, spatial analysis and interpretation abilities, and problem-solving skills.
- Prepare qualified graduates for careers in education, planning, scientific research, Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, and natural resource and environmental management, as well as for postgraduate studies.
- Develop students’ academic and practical competencies through field studies, laboratory applications, cartographic production, spatial and statistical data analysis, undergraduate research, and the effective use of modern geographical software and technologies.
- Enable students to collect geographical data from various sources and to organize, analyze, interpret, and represent such data cartographically, employing it to study physical and human phenomena and address spatial, environmental, and developmental issues.
- Enhance graduates’ communication, leadership, teamwork, and project management skills, enabling them to work effectively in multidisciplinary educational, research, and professional environments.
- Promote the principles of academic, professional, and ethical responsibility; strengthen awareness of environmental and societal issues; encourage innovation; and contribute to community service and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Geography by the University of Mosul.
The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).
Admission to the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography is governed by the admission regulations and policies approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved admission criteria for the program.
To be awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:
- Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
- Fulfilment of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
- Successful completion of all required laboratory applications, field studies, field training, and other practical components of the program, where applicable.
- Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation, as approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the transfer of previously earned academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography, graduates are expected to achieve the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), or Graduate Outcomes (GOs), which describe the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies required upon graduation:
GO1: An ability to recognize, identify, formulate, and address geographical problems by applying the principles of physical, human, and regional geography, as well as scientific and quantitative methods.
GO2: An ability to develop spatial studies, plans, and solutions that meet specified needs and constraints while considering public health and safety and global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors through the application of geographical analysis and synthesis.
GO3: An ability to design and conduct appropriate measurements, surveys, and field tests; ensure data quality; analyze and interpret results; and make informed scientific judgments to reach accurate conclusions.
GO4: An ability to communicate effectively with various segments of society and present geographical information and findings using appropriate written, oral, cartographic, and digital methods.
GO5: An ability to recognize the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with geographical issues and practices and make informed judgments that consider economic, environmental, societal, and global implications.
GO6: An ability to recognize the importance of the continuous self-development of professional knowledge and skills and understand how to acquire, evaluate, accumulate, and appropriately apply information.
GO7: An ability to work effectively within teams, set goals, plan activities, meet deadlines, and manage risks.
The Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography is aligned with Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF). The Geography Program adopts the examination, assessment, and grading regulations approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Student performance is assessed through a variety of continuous and summative assessment methods, including:
- Continuous assessment, including quizzes, assignments, and classroom activities.
- Midterm examinations.
- Final examinations.
- Laboratory application reports and practical assessments.
- Geography-related projects and coursework.
- Field training and field studies.
- Oral presentations and seminars.
- Graduation project assessment.
- Compliance with academic integrity regulations and institutional policies concerning academic misconduct, cheating, and plagiarism.
To be eligible for the award of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, students must successfully fulfil all graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul, including:
- Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits and all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
- Fulfilment of the minimum graduation requirements, including the required cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), in accordance with the applicable regulations and instructions.
- Successful completion of the graduation project and all required laboratory applications, practical components, field training, and field studies.
- Fulfilment of all academic and administrative requirements for the award of the Bachelor’s degree.
The Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program delivered in accordance with the Bologna Process and comprising 240 ECTS credits.
The program adopts a student-centred learning approach that integrates theoretical lectures, laboratory and practical applications, field studies and training, project-based learning, and the use of modern geographical software and technologies.
Students are trained to use specialized software and applications for Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, cartography, spatial and statistical analysis, and geographic database management, including ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, Google Earth Engine, and other specialized geospatial applications.
These learning activities are further supported by seminars, scientific and technical workshops, and practical and field training to enhance students’ academic and technical competencies, develop their digital skills, and prepare them for professional practice in geography-related fields.
Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography
The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Geography. The coordinator’s duties include overseeing curriculum implementation, monitoring the achievement of Graduate Outcomes, coordinating academic activities among faculty members and students, supervising laboratory activities, field training, and field studies, and ensuring the program’s alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR), and academic program accreditation requirements.
The Program Coordinator also supports curriculum review and development to ensure that the program keeps pace with recent advances in geography and geospatial technologies and remains responsive to labour market needs and emerging technologies.
