Department of History

The Bachelor’s Program in Education in History at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits and aligned with the Bologna Process. The program provides students with a strong foundation in the major fields of ancient, Islamic, medieval, modern, and contemporary history, followed by advanced study in historiography, historical methodology, source criticism, archival studies, and the analysis of primary and secondary historical sources. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications and research and analytical activities to develop historical understanding as well as research and academic skills.

Graduates acquire the analytical, communicative, and research skills necessary for studying and critically examining manuscripts, archival records, inscriptions, and historical documents, in addition to teaching and historical research skills. The program also prepares graduates for careers in teaching, academic and scholarly research, lifelong learning, and postgraduate studies, while fostering ethical responsibility and a commitment to meeting the needs of society and supporting the preservation of historical and cultural heritage.

  • Preparing graduates who possess sound scientific knowledge relevant to the History Program, with specialized knowledge in the fields of ancient, Islamic, medieval, modern, and contemporary history, in addition to educational and research skills that qualify them to work in education, scientific research, and the labor market. The Department also seeks to promote the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence in education, and to develop students’ critical thinking and effective communication skills in ways that contribute to the development of the educational process and serve society. Graduates will be able to:
  1. Work efficiently in the field of teaching and education as teachers or subject teachers in schools where history and social studies are taught. They may also work in official and non-official cultural and media institutions as editors, broadcasters, or program writers for historical and cultural channels or platforms, or for those concerned with Eastern heritage. In addition, they may work in research centers and museums as research assistants in the study of manuscripts, antiquities, and the rich history of the region, or as tour guides and translators in any official or non-official institution, civil society organization, or private-sector entity.
  2. Hold administrative and cultural positions in institutions that require specialized knowledge of the histories and cultures of societies and civilizations, such as publishing houses, archives, museums, and cultural centers. In addition, graduates will be able to identify historical phenomena, whether political, social, economic, or cultural, and understand their development over time, enabling them to accurately distinguish between different historical periods, regions, and schools of historical interpretation and the changes they have undergone throughout the ages. They will also be able to identify problems and shortcomings in modern interpretations and editions of historical texts and determine instances of historical error, bias, or distortion.
  3. Apply the principles of historical writing, source criticism, chronology, and documentation in a scientific and practical manner in historical writing, analysis, and academic discussion. They will also apply scientific research methodologies by employing modern academic approaches to textual criticism and the critical examination and editing of historical manuscripts and documents, and by relating them to their historical and social contexts. In addition, they will apply effective teaching and historical research strategies using the latest teaching methods and rigorous approaches to source criticism, archival research, and Arabic- and English-language historical references.
  4. Use digital technologies through modern software, digital archives, historical databases, and specialized electronic catalogues in conducting scientific research and academic writing, particularly with regard to authentic primary and secondary sources, including archival, official, ecclesiastical, civil, archaeological, and heritage records, in order to extract facts and knowledge and provide new critical readings. They will also employ communication and critical-thinking skills by using historical knowledge as an effective tool for promoting intercultural dialogue, disseminating the values of cultural and heritage diversity, and deconstructing and analyzing texts in an objective and scientifically rigorous manner.
  5. Participate in research or applied projects related to the critical editing, analysis, and publication of historical manuscripts and documents in cooperation with local and international research centers. They will also contribute to the development of digital software and applications designed to serve historical studies, such as digital archives, historical databases, mapping applications, and document-management tools. In addition, they will cooperate with cultural and media institutions in producing visual, audio, or written historical and cultural content to preserve collective memory and heritage.
  6. Adhere to professional ethics, safety standards, academic integrity, and the highest degree of accuracy in transmitting, documenting, critically editing, and interpreting historical texts and manuscripts without distortion or falsification, while respecting the intellectual property rights of historical sources and research. They will also uphold their ethical responsibility to preserve historical and cultural heritage as a human and civilizational legacy that unites rather than divides, and to disseminate it in a spirit of tolerance and cultural openness, while ensuring the safety and preservation of rare manuscripts and historical documents when handling or restoring them in order to protect them from damage.
  7. Develop their professional skills through continuous learning and by keeping abreast of modern technologies, the latest historical studies, methodologies, and theories, and their application to historical research and interpretation. They will also learn to use Digital Humanities tools and artificial intelligence in the digitization, classification, and analysis of historical texts and archival documents. In addition, they will continuously participate in international conferences, seminars, and specialized workshops in historical and heritage studies, and develop their skills in auxiliary historical disciplines, including archaeology, geography, archival studies, epigraphy, numismatics, and ancient languages, in order to deepen their understanding and teaching of history.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the

Bachelor of Education in History (B.A.) degree by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF),

or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher

Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

Admission to the Bachelor of Education (B.A.) in History program is governed by

-the regulations and admission policies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific

Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved

admission criteria for History.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Education (B.A.) in History, students must

successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

▪ Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective

-courses specified in the curriculum.

▪ Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the

regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR)

and the University of Mosul.

▪ Successful completion of all required laboratory work, field training, and other

practical components of the program, where applicable.

▪ Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and

graduation as approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research

(MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and transfer of academic credits are considered only

in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and

instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MO HESR) and

the University of Mosul.

It also interprets patterns of political, social, economic, cultural, and intellectual interaction across different regions and historical periods, and explains the transmission of ideas, institutions, and knowledge among civilizations throughout the ages.
  • Explains the historical development of civilizations and major historical eras, as well as the major works of prominent rulers, thinkers, reformers, historians, and other influential historical figures. It also explains the major schools of historiography, methods of historical writing, and differences in interpretation among historians.

    Employment as teaching assistants or researchers in history departments, research centers, archives, and related academic institutions, with the possibility of pursuing postgraduate studies and subsequently obtaining teaching and academic positions.

    Employment in public authorities concerned with antiquities and heritage, as well as in national museums, as specialists in deciphering inscriptions and reading inscriptions and writings on archaeological artifacts and historical sites.

Working as news broadcasters, program producers, and editors in satellite television channels, radio stations, and news websites concerned with the affairs of the components of society and the heritage of Mesopotamia.

Working in publishing houses, cultural institutions, and specialized journals to review historical books, articles, documents, and educational materials and ensure their factual accuracy, sound documentation, and academic quality.

Working in research and content-analysis departments that require the examination of historical, archival, political, and documentary materials in support of institutional research, strategic studies, and the preservation of civil peace.

Working in cooperation with specialists in examining confiscated manuscripts, documents, inscriptions, and archaeological artifacts and assisting in establishing their historical context, provenance, and authenticity.

Manuscript archiving and critical editing:
Managing, classifying, cataloguing, and evaluating collections of rare manuscripts and historical documents in libraries, archives, monasteries, churches, museums, and heritage institutions, and contributing to their critical editing, documentation, preservation, and scholarly publication.

Digital content and software development:
Working with technology companies, archives, libraries, and software developers to develop historical databases, digital archives, educational applications, digital maps, historical datasets, and artificial intelligence tools used in Digital Humanities and historical research.

The History Program adopts the examination, assessment, and grading regulations

approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the

University of Mosul. Student performance is assessed through a variety of continu ous and

summative assessment methods, including:

  • Continuous assessment (quizzes, assignments, and classroom activities).
  • Midterm examinations.
  • Final examinations.
  • Laboratory reports and practical assessments.
  • Summer training.
  • Oral presentations and seminars.

To be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Education (B.A.) in History, students

must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of

program delivered in accordance with the Bologna Process and comprising 240 ECTS

credits. The program adopts a student-centered learning approach that integrates theoretical

Students are trained to use industry-standard software for historical text preparation, source analysis, archival research, and historical research planning, including OCR and text-analysis software, digital archives, historical databases, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital publishing platforms, and other specialized historical applications. These educational activities are supported by seminars, technical workshops, and practical training to enhance students’ specialized competencies, digital skills, and readiness for professional and academic practice.

Program Coordinator of The  Bachelor of  Education (B.A.) in History

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and

continuous improvement of The  Bachelor of  Education (B.A.) in History program.

The role includes overseeing the implementation of the curriculum, monitoring t he

achievement of the Graduate Outcomes, coordinating academic activities among faculty

members and students, supervising laboratory and field training activities, and ensuring

alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, the Ministry of Higher

Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) regulations, and program accreditation

requirements. The Program Coordinator also supports curriculum review and enhancement

to ensure that the program remains responsive to advances in History, industry

needs, and emerging technologies.
