In pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit at the Presidency of the University of Mosul, the College of Political Science held a discussion of the master’s thesis entitled “Security Threats in the Middle East and Their Impact on the Policies of Regional Powers: Nuclear Programs as a Model,” submitted by Master’s student Shamous Abdulkarim Al-Obaidi, on Thursday, 13 August 2026.

The thesis examined the security threats facing the Middle East, with a focus on nuclear programs as one of the most prominent sources of threat, and analyzed their impact on the policies of regional powers and their security interactions.

The study aimed to analyze the nature of security threats associated with nuclear programs in the Middle East and identify their implications for the policies of regional powers, particularly amid the state of competition and security uncertainties prevailing in the region.

The study concluded that nuclear programs have contributed to complicating the regional security environment and prompted regional powers to adopt different policies to address these threats. It also found that international double standards, particularly in dealing with Israeli nuclear capabilities and Iran’s nuclear program, have reinforced mistrust and competition and affected regional stability.

The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Salem Matar Abdullah as Chair, Prof. Dr. Saddam Marir Hamad Atiya as Member, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Maysar Fathi as Member, and Prof. Dr. Adnan Khalaf Hamid as Member and Supervisor.

The discussion was attended by the Dean of the College, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suhaib Khalid Jassim Al-Taie, the Scientific and Administrative Assistant Deans, Asst. Prof. Dr. Younis Muayad Younis and Asst. Prof. Dr. Marwan Salem Ali, respectively, as well as the heads of the two academic branches and a number of postgraduate students.

Following the discussion, the committee’s decision to accept the thesis and award the student a Master’s degree was read.
