An international training program

As part of the United Nations Institute for Training and Development (UNITAD) programs, and in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Conference of the Parties to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention on Hazardous Chemicals, Assistant Professor Dr. Wissam Nemat Ibrahim Al-Saadi, a lecturer in the Public Law Department at the College of Law at the University of Mosul, participated in a specialized training and development program. The tremendous growth in the production and trade of chemicals over the past decades has raised concerns about the potential risks posed by hazardous chemicals, especially for countries that lack adequate infrastructure to monitor the import and use of chemicals, leaving them vulnerable. In response to these concerns, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Consent Procedure for Trade in Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade was adopted in 1998 and entered into force in 2004. The Convention aims to promote shared responsibility and cooperative efforts among parties in international trade of certain hazardous chemicals to protect human health and the environment from potential harm and contribute to their environmentally sound use. The above course is offered. An in-depth learning experience that systematically covers the mechanisms and provisions of the Convention and explores in detail the key concepts and processes.
