Department of Biology Discusses Master’s Thesis on the Impact of Heavy Metal Pollution on Microalgae

The Department of Biology at the College of Education for Women – University of Mosul held an outstanding scientific discussion on Sunday, July 27, 2025, for the Master’s thesis submitted by researcher Shahad Rafe Saeed Al-Sarraj, entitled:
“The Impact of Heavy Metal Water Pollution on the Molecular Structure and Metabolic Pathway of Phenolic Compounds in Selected Species of Microalgae.”

The thesis sheds light on the biochemical effects of aquatic environmental pollution by heavy metals and its implications for the molecular composition and metabolic pathways of phenolic compounds in microalgae. These organisms are considered important ecological indicators with increasing environmental and industrial relevance. The study aimed to contribute to the achievement of three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Goal 4: Quality Education,

  • Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation,

  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The discussion session was attended by the Dean of the College, Asst. Prof. Dr. Shatha Hazem Korkis, along with the Associate Deans for Scientific and Administrative Affairs, a group of faculty members from the department, and a number of postgraduate students.

The examining committee consisted of the following members:

  • Prof. Dr. Hussein Saber Mohammed Ali – Chair

  • Prof. Dr. Abd Ahmad Hassan Ardeeni – Member

  • Dr. Anwar Fakhri Thanoon – Member

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Fathi Abdullah Mandheel – Member and Supervisor

  • Dr. Aliya Hazem Abdulrazzaq Al-Qassimi – Member and Supervisor

The committee commended the researcher’s scientific efforts and her meticulous approach to analyzing and interpreting the data. They also provided a set of valuable scientific observations aimed at enhancing the quality and broadening the scope of the thesis. The thesis was accepted, and the candidate was awarded the Master’s degree with distinction.
