The “Shareek” Initiative at the University of Mosul Revives Cuneiform Script and Transforms It into a Living Profession at the College of Administration and Economics

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Administration and Economics, Professor Dr. Sinan Zuhair Mohammed Jameel, and as part of efforts to promote impactful community initiatives, the College of Administration and Economics, in cooperation with the Department of Marketing Management, hosted an applied scientific lecture on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
The lecture focused on the art of cuneiform writing as one of the oldest writing systems in human history, representing a deep-rooted civilizational legacy that reflects the identity of Mesopotamia and the authenticity of its cultural heritage.
The event was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Salem Khalil Khaled, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, and was organized by the Volunteer Work Unit, highlighting the college’s role in supporting pioneering initiatives with cultural and social impact.
In this context, the “Shareek” initiative team, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Bashar Thaker Saleh, Head of the Department of Marketing Management, delivered a distinguished practical lecture on cuneiform writing. The session included demonstrations of writing techniques on clay, the use of modern technologies such as laser engraving in designing inscriptions, and the integration of cuneiform into the production of handicrafts and accessories. This was part of the project “Shareek for the Profession of Cuneiform Writing,” which aims to revive this traditional craft and transform it into a viable professional activity.
The team also promoted the initiative by issuing an introductory brochure for the campaign “Write Your Name in the Language of Your Ancestors,” an innovative step to enhance awareness of cultural identity and encourage community engagement with this ancient heritage.
The initiative aims to prepare a generation capable of reading and writing cuneiform texts, moving this art form from its theoretical, museum-bound context into practical application. It also seeks to support individuals in simple professions by helping them develop their skills and exchange expertise, thereby enhancing employment opportunities and creativity.
The event was attended by all students participating in the initiative, along with a number of college staff members, in a vibrant academic and cultural atmosphere marked by active engagement.
At the conclusion of the event, the team expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the President of the University of Mosul for his support of such distinctive initiatives, which contribute to serving the community and revitalizing heritage with a modern spirit.
