College of Agriculture and Forestry

Department establishment information:

The Department of Forestry was established with the College of Agriculture and Forestry – the University of Mosul in 1964 after the Higher Forestry Institute was transferred from Abu Ghraib / Baghdad to Mosul, established in 1959 at the University of Baghdad. The Forestry Department is one of the three central departments that formed the College of Agriculture at the time. Thus, it will be the first specialized department in forest sciences at the level of the Iraqi country and the Arab world.

Department Mission:

The Forestry Department has contributed to graduating specialized cadres in forest sciences with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well as accepting and graduating Arab students from many Arab countries, including Libya, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Sudan, Tunisia, Palestine, Algeria, and Mauritania. In the Forestry Department, many studies, applied research, and contracts with the public sector and ministries have been completed to serve the public interest, with the contribution of highly specialized scientific cadres represented by its professors. The department also provides forestry scientific consultations in its various specializations and participates in supervising and implementing many afforestation projects at the governorate level and in the country.

Department goals:

1. To prepare the scientific staff to meet the requirements of establishing high relative importance forestry projects, whether from developing or developed societies. The environmental changes that have occurred worldwide are comprehensive, such as global warming, which requires high effort. This effort includes establishing new forests and preserving existing forests by investing in them following a scientific statement that adopts the principle of continuous permanent production.
2. To prepare a qualified scientific cadre who will undertake to provide the requirements and implement forestry projects in the field of tourism, in addition to afforestation of entrances to cities, public roads and squares, and afforestation of arid areas, as well as the treatment of desertification and the stabilization of dunes in different areas of roads and other public areas, which require a scientific cadre.
3. To follow up the scientific development in the field of forests through conducting research and scientific studies in the various research tracks of forest sciences and their applications in establishing pioneering forest projects.
