Discussion of a doctorate thesis in the College of Science

A doctorate thesis entitled “Biostratigraphy, geochemistry, and the paleoenvironment of the Kometan Formation (Late Cretaceous) in selected sections in northeastern Iraq” was discussed in the department of Geology on Monday, the 27th of February, 2023.Part of it was attended by the Dean of the College of Sciences, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants, the head of the Department of Earth Sciences, and a number of the college’s academic staff. The study submitted by the student (Muhammad Ali Muhammad Suleiman) dealt with a study of stratigraphy of the formation of Kometan in the sections of Samaqoli and Tabin in northeastern Iraq, where the taxonomic and stratigraphic study of the planktonic Foraminifera was conducted, the study of facies analysis, sedimentary environment, stable isotopes and the geochemistry of the formation. The study concluded that the age of the Kometan Formation is Late Turonian- Early Campanian and its sedimentary environment is the Outer Shelf environment and the Upper – Middle Bathyal environment with environmental conditions represented by the rise in sea level and dominance of the tropical-subtropical climate, high salinity and low oxygen content. The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Fadel Ahmed Amin Lawa from the University of Sulaymaniyah, with the membership of each Professor. Dr. Nisreen Malallah Aziz, Assistant Professor Dr. Qutaiba Tawfiq Sultan Al-Yuzbeki, Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Sultan Shehab, and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Ahmed Muhammad Amin Al-Hajj, and under the supervision each of Professor Dr. Majid Majdi Abd.
