Department of Biology

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits, aligned with the Bologna Process. The program provides students with a strong foundation in fundamental biological sciences, including cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, botany, zoology, ecology, and physiology, followed by advanced study in specialized branches such as environmental biology, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, and applied biology. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with laboratory experiments, fieldwork, scientific research, practical training, and project-based learning to develop students’ scientific knowledge, technical competence, and professional skills. Graduates acquire analytical, practical, communication, research, and problem-solving skills required to study living organisms, understand biological processes, assess environmental and ecological issues, contribute to biodiversity conservation, and support applications in health, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental management. The program also prepares graduates for professional practice, lifelong learning, and postgraduate studies while promoting scientific ethics, teamwork, innovation, research excellence, and a commitment to serving society and supporting sustainable development.

The Biology Program aims to:

 

  1. Developing the ability to innovate and support scientific entrepreneurship

The Department of Biology seeks to enhance students’ skills in creative thinking and solving problems in unconventional ways by studying biological sciences in a comprehensive manner and their applications and uses in society from a theoretical, scientific, and applied perspective. Preparing scientific cadres at the primary and higher levels to work in the medical, health, agricultural, food, oil, and pharmaceutical industries and biological branches. The department also aims to provide an educational environment that encourages the presentation of new ideas and the acquisition of scientific techniques by its students in the use of devices and equipment that can be used in their theoretical and applied studies and provide them with academic and applied information about biological sciences and their various trends and specializations, and research and study everything new in biological sciences and keep pace with scientific developments in this field and include them in the prescribed curricula. It also contributes to building a generation capable of providing innovative solutions to scientific and social problems. In addition to encouraging students to transform their research ideas into commercial projects by providing business incubators and supporting modern technologies.

  1. Linking theory to application and providing institutions with qualified graduates

The Department of Biology considers that combining theoretical and practical aspects is essential for understanding scientific concepts. Therefore, this goal is enhanced by increasing the number of partnerships with industrial and research institutions, which provides students with the necessary practical training opportunities and provides state institutions and the mixed and private sectors (medical, industrial, and laboratory institutions) with primary and specialized senior cadres to work in this field to contribute to economic and social development.

  1. Improving the quality of scientific research and developing graduate programs

Scientific research is the axis of progress in any field. Therefore, the Department of Biology works to teach students how to design experiments, analyze results, research and study everything new in biological sciences, keep pace with scientific developments in this field, and include them in the prescribed curricula, and contribute to building a generation capable of providing innovative solutions to scientific and social problems. In addition to encouraging students to transform their research ideas into commercial projects by providing business incubators and supporting modern technologies in modern fields such as sustainable development, bioprocessing, and all medical, health, agricultural, food, oil, pharmaceutical, and biological fields.

  1. Enhancing creative communication skills and promoting environmental sustainability

Effective communication skills are a key element for scientists to communicate their ideas. Therefore, the curricula in the Department of Biology include training courses focused on scientific communication and presentations, which help students express their ideas clearly and effectively. In addition to incorporating sustainability concepts into the curricula, and encouraging research that supports the environment and sustainable practices, to ensure the environment for future generations.

  1. Enhancing ethical awareness and preparing a generation of scientists committed to the highest standards

The Department of Biology seeks to promote the values of scientific ethics, as workshops are organized on scientific ethics and case studies, which illustrate the importance of adhering to these principles during academic and scientific activities. Students’ commitment to ethical and professional standards is essential to ensure their ability to contribute to scientific progress responsibly.

  1. Encouraging effective teamwork and promoting international cooperation

Teamwork is essential in the academic environment. Therefore, professors in the Department of Biology design group projects as part of the curricula to enhance the skills of cooperation among students and achieve common goals effectively. In addition to establishing partnerships with other universities to exchange experiences and scientific research, which contributes to updating curricula and enhancing the quality of education.

  1. Introducing Artificial Intelligence and Nanotechnology

Integrating the fields of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology into the curricula ensures that students are aware of the latest scientific developments in the fields of molecular diagnostics, nanotechnology, and the use and analysis of digital data. Sub-specializations or elective courses can be created that focus on these modern technologies.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biology by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology program is governed by the regulations and admission policies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved admission criteria for science programs.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

 

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
  • Successful completion of all required laboratory work, summer training at the end of the sixth semester, and other practical components of the program, where applicable, and other practical components of the program, where applicable.
  • Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation as approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and transfer of academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology program, graduates are expected to achieve the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Graduate Outcomes (GOs):

 

  • GO1: Ability to Identify Scientific Problems: Students will be able to recognize, define, and clearly formulate various scientific problems, using appropriate scientific concepts through mastering the fundamental principles in different branches of Biology.
  • GO2:Application of Scientific Knowledge: Students will be capable of applying principles of Biology to solve field-related problems and will demonstrate the ability to provide effective solutions that meet the needs of society.
  • GO3: Conducting Scientific Tests: Students will acquire the skills to design and implement scientific tests with quality assurance, analyze results accurately, and interpret findings using laboratory and field techniques to generate solutions for diverse biological problems.
  • GO4: Effective Communication Skills: Students will be able to communicate smoothly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with various audiences and administrative levels.
  • GO5: Ethical and Professional Awareness: Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethical and professional responsibilities, as well as awareness of the economic, environmental, societal, and global implications of technical and scientific solutions to biological and environmental issues.
  • GO6: Teamwork: Students will be able to work effectively within scientific teams, with the ability to define common goals, plan activities, manage risks, communicate with the community, and work collaboratively in a spirit of teamwork.
  • GO7: Keeping Pace with Technological Developments: Students will acquire the necessary skills to keep up with advances in modern technologies, enabling them to use technological tools effectively in medical, industrial, and laboratory fields.

The Biology Program adopts the examination, assessment, and grading regulations approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Student performance is assessed through a variety of continuous and summative assessment methods, including:

 

  • Continuous assessment (quizzes, homework assignments, and classroom activities).
  • Midterm examinations.
  • Final examinations (theoretical and practical).
  • Laboratory reports of practical tests.
  • Summer training.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biology program. The role includes overseeing curriculum delivery, coordinating academic activities among faculty members and students, supervising geological fieldwork training camps and laboratories, and ensuring alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, MOHESR regulations, and program accreditation requirements.
