Department of Medical Physics

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits, aligned with the Bologna Process. The program provides students with a strong foundation in fundamental physical sciences, fundamentals of chemistry and biology,  modern physics, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, radiation physics, and radiobiology, followed by advanced study in specialized branches such as diagnostic radiology physics, radiotherapy physics, nuclear medicine, medical imaging, and health physics. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with laboratory experiments, clinical hospital training, quality control procedures, research activities, and project-based learning to develop technical competence and professional skills. Graduates acquire the analytical, practical, communication, and problem-solving abilities required to operate advanced medical equipment, evaluate radiation hazards, ensure patient safety, and support clinical and healthcare infrastructure projects. The program also prepares graduates for professional medical physics practice, lifelong learning, and postgraduate studies while promoting ethical responsibility, teamwork, innovation, and a commitment to serving the needs of society and supporting sustainable healthcare development.

The Medical Physics Program aims to:

  1. Linking theory to practice: Providing opportunities for students in the Department of Medical Physics to apply scientific knowledge in real situations, enabling them to effectively face field challenges.
  2. Improving the quality of scientific research: Teaching students in the Department of Medical Physics how to design and conduct innovative scientific tests, with a focus on comprehensive analysis of results and scientifically supported conclusions.
  3.  Promoting ethical awareness: Instilling the value of ethical and professional responsibility in the students of the Department of Medical Physics, emphasizing the importance of adhering to ethical principles in all their scientific activities.
  4. Encouraging effective teamwork : Fostering a spirit of cooperation and teamwork among students in the Department of Medical Physics, enabling them to set common goals and plan activities in various innovative ways.
  5. Integrating modern technology and introducing artificial intelligence and nanotechnology : Enhancing the use of modern technologies in education and learning, allowing students in the Department of Medical Physics to benefit from advanced technological tools in the field of medical physics to achieve sustainable development goals.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Medical Physics by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics program is governed by the regulations and admission policies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved admission criteria for science programs.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
  • Successful completion of all required laboratory work, clinical and hospital training, quality control practicals, and other practical components of the program, where applicable.
  • Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation as approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and transfer of academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics program, graduates are expected to achieve the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Graduate Outcomes (GOs):

 

  • GO1: The ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve medical physics problems using the basic and applied knowledge of medical physics to work with other scientific and clinical disciplines to serve in societal, healthcare, scientific, and higher educational institutions.
  • GO2: The ability to use information technology and specialized software applications in medical physics and healthcare.
  • GO3: Work in the spirit and ethics of the profession, complying with radiation protection standards, medical ethics, and patient safety regulations.
  • GO4: The ability to work within multidisciplinary clinical and scientific teams to analyze and identify problems and be obligated to meet planned deadlines to solve them.
  • GO5: The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills in professional fields of medical physics (such as radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, and health physics).
  • GO6: The ability to identify the main lines of physical experiments and clinical quality assurance procedures, dealing with them using accurate analysis and interpretation of data.
  • GO7: The ability to use modern information technology, advanced computational methods, and medical software systems.

The Medical Physics Program adopts the examination, assessment, and grading regulations approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Student performance is assessed through a variety of continuous and summative assessment methods, including:

  • Continuous assessment (quizzes, homework assignments, and classroom activities).
  • Midterm examinations.
  • Final examinations (theoretical and practical).
  • Laboratory reports, practical medical physics experiments, and radiation dosimetry practical tests.
  • Clinical and hospital training reports, quality assurance (QA) reports, and laboratory notebooks.

To be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics, students must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul, including:

 

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits and all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements, including the required cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Successful completion of clinical and hospital training programs, graduation research projects, and all required laboratory and practical components.

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program delivered in accordance with the Bologna Process and comprising 240 ECTS credits. The program adopts a student-centered learning approach that integrates theoretical lectures, practical physics and clinical laboratory experiments, radiation dosimetry procedures, hospital and clinical training, medical equipment quality assurance (QA) protocols, and project-based learning. Students are trained to utilize industry- and clinical-standard software and technologies for medical image processing (DICOM platforms), radiotherapy Treatment Planning Systems (TPS), dosimetry simulation, and biomedical data analysis. These learning activities are supported by technical workshops, scientific seminars, and practical clinical/hospital training to ensure high professional readiness.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Physics program. The role includes overseeing curriculum delivery, monitoring the achievement of Graduate Outcomes, coordinating academic activities among faculty members and students, supervising clinical/hospital training programs and specialized laboratories, and ensuring alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, MOHESR regulations, and program accreditation requirements.
