Department of Earth and Petroleum Sciences

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits, aligned with the Bologna Process. The program provides students with a strong foundation in fundamental geological sciences, earth materials, structural geology, stratigraphy, and paleontology, followed by advanced study in specialized branches such as petroleum geology, economic geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, and geophysics. The Geology and Petroleum Program aims to:

 

  1. Provide students with a comprehensive education that establishes a strong foundation in the core disciplines of geological sciences while fostering scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, and field observation skills.
  1. Prepare graduates for successful professional careers and postgraduate studies by developing their knowledge and ability to investigate earth materials, map geological structures, and evaluate natural resources in accordance with recognized professional standards and ethical practices.
  1. Develop students’ technical and practical competencies through laboratory analyses, geological Fieldwork training, subsurface interpretation, undergraduate research, and the effective use of modern geological software, digital technologies, and analytical instruments.
  1. Enhance graduates’ communication, leadership, teamwork, and project management skills, enabling them to effectively participate in multidisciplinary earth science teams and manage exploration or environmental assessment projects.
  1. Promote research, innovation, environmental sustainability, geohazard mitigation, occupational health and safety, and lifelong learning while preparing competent geologists capable of meeting labor market needs and contributing to sustainable community development.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Geology and Petroleum by the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), or its equivalent, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum program is governed by the regulations and admission policies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul. Applicants must meet the approved admission criteria for science programs.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum, students must successfully satisfy all graduation requirements, including:

 

  • Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits, including all compulsory and elective courses specified in the curriculum.
  • Achievement of the minimum graduation requirements in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.
  • Successful completion of all required laboratory work, geological fieldwork mapping training, and other practical components of the program, where applicable.
  • Compliance with all academic regulations governing assessment, progression, and graduation as approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and transfer of academic credits are considered only in cases of student transfer or course equivalency, in accordance with the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the University of Mosul.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum program, graduates are expected to achieve the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Graduate Outcomes (GOs):

 

GO1: The ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve geological problems using the basic knowledge of geology to work with other sciences to serve in societal scientific and higher educational institutions.

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program delivered in accordance with the Bologna Process and comprising 240 ECTS credits. The program adopts a student-centered learning approach that integrates theoretical lectures, microscopic laboratory analysis, hands-on specimen identification, extensive geological field trips, mapping exercises, and project-based learning. Students are trained to utilize industry-standard software and technologies for geological mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), subsurface correlation, and spatial data analysis (such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and specialized petrophysical/geophysical evaluation tools). These learning activities are supported by technical workshops, seminars, and practical field training camps to ensure high professional readiness.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and Petroleum program. The role includes overseeing curriculum delivery, monitoring the achievement of Graduate Outcomes, coordinating academic activities among faculty members and students, supervising geological fieldwork training camps and laboratories, and ensuring alignment with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, MOHESR regulations, and program accreditation requirements.
