A Landmark Scientific Achievement – First in Iraq and Second Worldwide by Researchers from the College of Science

In a remarkable scientific accomplishment that adds to the record of achievements of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Israa Ghanem Hazem Al-Sammak and Master’s student Tayba Nashwan Salem Taha successfully registered the complete genomic sequence of Brachybacterium epidermidis TE.iq, isolated from the conjunctiva of newborn children in Mosul City.

This registration is considered the first of its kind locally and the second worldwide in the NCBI GenBank.

In addition, the two researchers managed to register 15 new bacterial isolates in the global gene bank belonging to different species, including:
Stutzerimonas stutzeri, E. coli, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus licheniformis, Corynebacterium amycolatum, Micrococcus yunnanensis, Staphylococcus hominis, Exiguobacterium mexicanum, Brachybacterium epidermidis.

These isolates were documented under the codes:
TE.iq, TeEsr4, TeEsr5, TeEsr10, TeEsr13, TeEsr14, TeEr15, TeEsr1, TeEsr11, TEMOSUL, TEIRAQ, TeEsr7, TeEsr9, TeEr6, TeEsr12.

This achievement comes after a series of precise diagnoses and advanced molecular analyses, enriching international genetic databases with new entries and highlighting the pioneering role of the Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Mosul, in the fields of microbiology and genetics.

🌿 We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed faculty and students, wishing them continued success in their academic and scientific endeavors.
