Research Team from the Department of Biology Registers Two New Fungal Isolates in the NCBI Database

A research team from the Department of Biology at the College of Science, University of Mosul, has successfully registered two new fungal isolates in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, as part of its ongoing academic research activities.

The work was supervised by Prof. Dr. Faten Nuri Mallaabd, with the participation of undergraduate research students: Zaman Bashar Abdulhamid, Malak Mujahid Hamid, Zainab Falah Hassan, and Luqman Kanaan Luqman.

The recorded isolates belong to the following species:

  • Pleurotus columbinus FAZLMZ.IQ2 (oyster basidiomycete fungus)
  • Fusarium solani FAZLMZ.IQ1 (ascomycete fungus)

These fungi were isolated from agricultural fields in Al-Rashidiya during field surveys targeting macrofungi of basidiomycetes and ascomycetes in several farms in Mosul. The isolates were considered significant due to their environmental, nutritional, and medical importance, and were registered for the first time globally in the NCBI database.

This achievement represents an important step in academic research requirements and contributes to documenting fungal biodiversity data and making it available to researchers worldwide.

The Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, extended her congratulations to the research team for this scientific accomplishment, wishing them continued success and progress.
