Postgraduate Seminar Held in the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences

As part of its commitment to supporting scientific research and enhancing academic capabilities, the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences at the College of Science, University of Mosul, hosted a postgraduate seminar presented by Mr. Mohammed Jasim Tamer, a Master’s student specializing in Micropaleontology, on Tuesday, 2 June 2026. The seminar was attended by a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.
The seminar, entitled:
“Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy and Depositional Environment of the Aaliji Formation in the Stiflan Section, Zakho Area, Northern Iraq”
was conducted under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Sultan Shihab Al-Hadidi.
The study aimed to identify the genera and species of foraminifera within the Aaliji Formation and determine their stratigraphic distribution and biostratigraphic significance in order to establish the geological age of the formation. It also sought to utilize foraminiferal assemblages to reconstruct the depositional environment and prevailing paleoclimatic conditions, while comparing the findings with previous studies conducted both within Iraq and internationally.
The research combined fieldwork and laboratory investigations, including detailed examination of rock sequences, microscopic analyses, and the necessary scientific assessments.
The seminar featured productive scientific discussions and an exchange of knowledge between faculty members and students, contributing to the enhancement of research skills and the development of academic and scientific competencies.
The College of Science extends its best wishes to its students for continued success and academic excellence.
