College of Science Seminar Series

As part of the postgraduate activities aimed at supporting scientific research and enhancing academic capabilities, Ms. Shireen Hussein Haji, an MSc student in the Department of Geology and Petroleum, College of Science, University of Mosul, delivered a scientific seminar on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, in the field of Sedimentology, entitled:

“Sedimentological Study and Tectonic Setting of the Fatha Formation in the Southern Limb of the Mateen Anticline, Northern Iraq”

The seminar was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Saddam Issa Mustafa and Asst. Prof. Dr. Safwan Fathi Hamid, and was attended by a number of the department’s faculty members and postgraduate students.

The study aimed to identify the petrographic characteristics of the Fatha Formation succession, determine its depositional environment, and interpret the tectonic setting that influenced the sedimentary basin during and after deposition. Particular emphasis was placed on the study area’s proximity to the continental collision zone, as it represents the terminal part of the sedimentary basin. To achieve these objectives, 36 rock samples were collected, and detailed field measurements of bedding orientations were carried out.

The seminar featured productive scientific discussions and an exchange of ideas and expertise between faculty members and students, contributing to the enhancement of research skills and the development of postgraduate students’ scientific capabilities.

We wish our students continued success and academic excellence.
