Doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Science discusses the evaluation of methods for early diagnosis of bacterial neonatal sepsis infections and the possibility of their improvement

On Monday, July 20, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Mosul discussed the doctoral dissertation taggedevaluation of methods for early diagnosis of bacterial neonatal sepsis in Mosul and the possibility of improving them “ The presentation was made by PhD student Saadallah Fathi from the microbiology branch, in the presence of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants for scientific and administrative affairs, the head of the life sciences department, and a number of faculty teachers. The thesis was aimed at assessing the accuracy of diagnostic methods used to detect bacterial sepsis in newborns, searching for more efficient and fast molecular diagnostic methods and biomarkers for early detection of infection. The study included 300 newborns diagnosed with sepsis or suspected of being clinically infected in a number of Mosul city hospitals. The results of the study showed that traditional diagnostic methods have limited sensitivity in the early detection of neonatal sepsis, while molecular diagnostic methods based on the 16S rRNA gene outperformed in terms of accuracy and speed in detecting infection. The results also showed that procalcitonin (PCT) is one of the most accurate biomarkers in early diagnosis, along with the important role of IL-23 and IFN-α in enhancing the confirmation of infection. The study was able to register four new bacterial strains isolated from infected newborns in the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The importance of the thesis is highlighted in addressing bacterial neonatal sepsis as one of the dangerous health conditions that threaten the lives of children during the first days after birth, as the results of the study confirmed that the combination of molecular diagnostic techniques and biomarkers represents a promising approach for early and accurate detection of infection, contributing to the timely start of treatment, improving survival chances and reducing complications and deaths among newborns.
