On Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science / University of Mosul discussed the tagged doctoral thesis: “spectral and chromatographic estimation of some organic compounds in different models”, submitted by student Ahlam Ahmed Shihab Ahmed, in the Hall of Professor Dr. Yousef Abdullah Shihab for discussions, in the presence of the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the head of the department and some graduate students. The study aimed to shed light on a number of aspects related to the health of the child, through two main axes; the first dealt with the estimation of essential unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, in the milk of healthy mothers in the city of Mosul, by developing an analytical method using gas chromatography technology equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID), with the study of some factors affecting their concentrations, including the age of the mother, the number of births and the level of family income. The second axis deals with the study of the transition of some organic compounds from plastic bottles to milk as a result of heating and repeated thermal sterilization, especially bisphenol A and diethyl phthalate. Bisphenol A was estimated by various spectroscopic methods based on color reactions, while diethyl phthalate was estimated using the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique, after stabilizing the optimal operating conditions of the method. The results showed that some types of plastic bottles release bisphenol A and diethyl phthalate into milk when subjected to repeated heating or sterilization, in varying proportions depending on the type of feeding. The study recommended the importance of breastfeeding, taking care of the mother’s health and nutrition, and preferring to use glass bottles instead of plastic, and in case of having to use plastic bottles, it is advisable to change them periodically and avoid exposing them to repeated thermal sterilization. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Nabil Sabih Othman, with the membership of Prof. Dr. repwar Omar Hassan, Assistant Prof. Dr. Khalida Mohammed Omar daee, Assistant Prof. Dr. hind Ahmed Mahmoud Abdullah, Assistant Prof. Dr. Saad Hassani Sultan zarjis, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Hana Shukr Mahmoud and Prof. Dr. Iyad Jagan Khurshid. The dean, Professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to assistant professor Dr. ripwar Omar Hassan from Salah al-Din University, in appreciation of his scientific efforts in the discussion and for taking the trouble to travel. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the scientific effort exerted in the thesis and its direct applied importance in the health field, wishing the researcher continued success and success.
