Doctoral dissertation discusses the preparation and diagnosis of some ionic liquids and the study of their efficiency in the desulfurization of oil derivatives

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science discussed, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, the doctoral thesis tagged “preparation and diagnosis of some ionic liquids and their complex salts with a number of Lewis acids and loading them on activated charcoal to study their efficiency in the process of desulfurization of petroleum derivatives”, submitted by researcher Lana Abdul Hamid Rashid Al-Nuaimi from the branch of inorganic chemistry. The study aimed to prepare a number of molten organic salts derived from benzotriazole, through the direct reaction of alkyl halides, which included methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, allyl bromide, allyl iodide, ethyl bromide, with the nitrogen base benzotriazole in a molar ratio (1:1). The seven prepared organic salts were diagnosed using various spectroscopic and physical techniques, including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), mass spectrometry, Proton-carbon magnetic nuclear resonance spectroscopy (H-NMR and C-NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), electronic spectra (UV-Vis), as well as molar electrical conductivity measurements. The study also included the preparation of forty-five complex salts of these organic salts, through their reaction with chlorides of transition and non-transition metals of manganese (II), Iron (II), cobalt (II), nickel (II), Copper (II), kharin (II), palladium (II), with molar ratios (2:1) metal to organic salt. These complex salts were diagnosed using infrared spectroscopy (IR), atomic absorption spectroscopy, electronic spectra (UV-Vis), molar electrical conductivity measurements, and magnetic measurements. The results of measurements of molar electrical conductivity showed that all prepared organic salts had a conductive electrolyte behavior in a ratio of (1:1), while complex salts were conductive in a ratio of (2:1). The results of magnetic measurements and electronic spectra also showed that all complex salts prepared for transition and extrinsic elements possessed a tetrahedral structure around the central metal atom, while complex salts prepared for palladium metal possessed a planar square structure. The thesis was characterized by loading some organic salts and their palladium metal complexes on Activated Carbon, after measuring the surface area of activated carbon using the BET technique, in order to study their efficiency in the process of removing sulfur from the oil model, after adjusting the optimal conditions for the removal process, as the removal rate of loaded ionic liquids reached 50% and 53% under experimental conditions. The thermal stability of Activated Carbon and activated carbon loaded with selected organic salts and their complex salts of palladium binary was also studied, as it was found that all materials used in the application of desulfurization possess high thermal stability and stability suitable for application, and the thermal study also explained that the thermal decomposition process is carried out in two basic stages within the measurement range. The surfaces of the loaded salts were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the images showed morphological changes on the surface, which is an indicator of the success of the loading process. After the completion of the application of the desulfurization process in the oil model, it was applied to the commercial petroleum derivative diesel oil using the same salts and their complexes, but with X-ray fluorescence technology, and the results gave very good efficiency, reflecting the excellence of ionic liquids and their complexes in achieving the goals of sustainable development and a clean environment. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. sohaba Ali Ahmed, and the membership of Prof. Dr. Farah Tariq said, Assistant Prof. Dr. Khansa Shaker Nematullah, Assistant Prof. Dr. Samaa Adnan Rauf, Assistant Prof. Dr. Ahmed Muzaffar Mohammed, and Prof. Dr. Asim Adel Sabah as a member and supervisor. On the sidelines of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to the assistant professor, Dr. Samaa Adnan Rauf from the northern Technical University, in appreciation of her scientific efforts and active participation in the dissertation discussion Committee, and in appreciation of her giving and contributions to support the scientific and academic career. We wish the researcher success and excellence in her scientific and academic career.
