Overview of the Department of Physics

The Department of Physics is one of the most important and scientifically prestigious departments, holding significant national value for over 56 years. Throughout these years, the department and its faculty members have consistently contributed to groundbreaking research, playing a key role in enhancing the department’s reputation as one of the premier institutions for higher education. Additionally, the department has provided an outstanding educational and creative opportunity for many talented individuals.

The College of Science in Mosul was established in the summer of 1963 and was affiliated with the University of Baghdad, similar to the College of Medicine, which was founded in 1959.

The academic journey at the College of Science began in 1963 with two departments: the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Mathematics. In 1964, the Department of Physics was established. The first batch of physics graduates graduated in 1968, with 33 students. Master’s programs began in 1977, and doctoral studies in the Department of Physics were introduced in 1995.

To date, the department has graduated 57 cohorts since its inception. It has had a profound impact on its students and the scientific community, contributing to the academic and professional advancement of the field of physics.
