🎉 New Genetic Discoveries Registered by Faculty Member and PhD Student from the Department of Biology

As part of the ongoing scientific achievements at the College of Science, Professor Dr. Mahmood Ismail Mohammed from the Department of Biology, in collaboration with Assistant Professor Dr. Sarab Dawood Suleiman from Al-Hadba University and PhD student Manar Khudhur Ahmed from the Zoology Division, have successfully registered three new genetic variants of the Alpha-synuclein (SNCA) gene in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) gene bank.

These newly identified variants, registered under the accession numbers PV550272, PV550271, and PV522068, were discovered in patients with Parkinson’s Disease and individuals with a family history of the disease in the city of Mosul. The SNCA gene is known to be associated with familial Parkinson’s Disease, and identifying its mutations plays a crucial role in the early detection of the disease—even before the onset of motor symptoms.

On this occasion, the College of Science, represented by the Dean, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, extends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for continued success and scientific excellence.
